Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Scripture: Psalm 139:14 — “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt the weight of years, life experiences, or unmet expectations? Perhaps you’ve wondered if you are still relevant, beautiful, or valuable. Society may whisper that age diminishes worth, that life slows, or that your best contributions are behind you. Yet God’s Word offers a radically different perspective.

In Psalm 139:14, David declares: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Let’s pause and unpack that phrase. “Fearfully made” does not mean made in fear. Instead, it conveys reverence, awe, and intentionality. God crafted you with care and precision, knowing every detail of your body, heart, and mind. He formed you with purpose, wisdom, and an intentional design that reflects His glory. You are not a random assembly of experiences or DNA. You are a creation of divine intention.

The second part of the verse, “wonderfully made,” reminds us that there is beauty, uniqueness, and value in your very being. Wonder is something that inspires amazement; it points to something extraordinary. God’s handiwork is extraordinary. Your personality, gifts, experiences, and even your scars—all of it—contribute to the masterpiece He has designed. You are fully equipped for the season of life you are in now, and your worth is not defined by numbers, appearances, or societal standards.

For women over 50, Psalm 139:14 is particularly powerful. We live in a culture that often undervalues wisdom, experience, and maturity. Yet God’s Word says that every stage of life carries purpose and beauty. Your wrinkles, gray hairs, life experiences, and lessons learned are not imperfections—they are proof of a life carefully crafted by God. They tell a story of survival, growth, faith, and resilience. You are a living testament to God’s handiwork, fearfully and wonderfully made. This verse also invites reflection on how we speak to ourselves. Too often, the inner voice is critical, comparing ourselves to others or lamenting what we perceive as flaws. Psalm 139:14 calls us to a posture of praise—to acknowledge our own worth and God’s creativity in our lives. When we recognize that we are wonderfully made, we can walk in confidence, gratitude, and purpose.

So how do we live this truth daily?

First, begin each day with acknowledgment: praise God for the creation that is you. Speak words of affirmation over yourself, even in seasons when self-doubt creeps in.

Second, embrace your uniqueness: honor your experiences, gifts, and personality as divine tools for purpose and service.

Finally, live in gratitude: recognize that God’s design equips you to serve, love, and impact the world in ways only you can.

Take a moment today to reflect on your life and body. Thank God for the specific ways He has created you. Celebrate your journey, your growth, and your resilience. Allow His affirmation of your worth to replace the lies of fear, comparison, or inadequacy. You are not too old, too ordinary, or too overlooked. You are fearfully and wonderfully made—fully known, fully loved, and fully equipped for the plans God still has for you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what ways have you struggled to see your value or beauty, and how does Psalm 139:14 speak truth to those struggles?

  2. What aspects of your life—your experiences, gifts, or seasons—reflect God’s wonderful handiwork in you?

  3. How can you begin to speak affirming words over yourself today, embracing the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for creating me with care, intention, and love. Help me to see myself through Your eyes—as fearfully and wonderfully made. Replace any self-doubt with Your truth, and help me to walk confidently in the beauty, purpose, and uniqueness You have placed in me. Teach me to celebrate every season of life as part of Your perfect design. Amen.

Affirmation: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am fully known, fully loved, and fully equipped to live out God’s purpose in this season of life.”
