Scripture: Romans 8:16 — “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
Have you ever felt unworthy of love, unsure of your place, or overlooked by those around you? Life has a way of whispering lies that we are too flawed, too old, or too ordinary to be truly known or deeply loved. Yet the Bible offers a truth so profound it changes everything: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
This verse reminds us that our identity is not determined by accomplishments, appearances, or other people’s opinions. Our identity is rooted in God Himself. Being God’s child is not conditional—it is a status that is secured by His Spirit and confirmed within our own hearts. The Holy Spirit speaks to your spirit daily, affirming your place in God’s family. You are not overlooked, forgotten, or insignificant. You belong.
For women over 50, this truth carries special significance. Society often suggests that we’ve passed our season of influence or that our best contributions are behind us. The world may overlook our wisdom, experience, and resilience, but God does not. He sees every tear you’ve shed, every trial you’ve endured, and every lesson you’ve learned. He calls you His child and affirms that your life still carries purpose, impact, and meaning.
Romans 8:16 also speaks to the intimacy of our relationship with God. The Spirit’s testimony is personal—it resonates within you, bringing assurance, peace, and confidence. This is not a distant, formal relationship with a deity; this is family. You can approach God as a child approaches a loving parent—with trust, honesty, and confidence. You are invited to rest in His love, bring your needs to Him, and live knowing that He delights in you.
Being God’s child also means security. Romans 8 reminds us that nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38–39). This is not just comfort for our hearts; it is freedom. Freedom from striving for approval, freedom from fear of rejection, and freedom from the pressures of comparison. When the Spirit confirms, “You are mine,” it is a guarantee that our worth is secure, our position in God’s family is eternal, and our identity is unshakable.
How do we live in the reality of being God’s children? First, we listen to the Spirit. Pause each day to invite the Holy Spirit to remind you of your worth, your purpose, and your belonging. Second, we embrace intimacy with God. Speak to Him freely, share your joys and struggles, and rest in His response. Third, we walk boldly in this identity. Allow the assurance that you are God’s child to shape your decisions, your relationships, and the way you see yourself.
Today, reflect on this: You are fully known and fully loved. You are chosen, secure, and precious in the Father’s eyes. Your life carries weight, significance, and purpose—not because of what you do, but because of who you are: His child. Let the Spirit speak to your heart, and let that testimony bring confidence and peace in every season of life.
