Who Told You That

Who Told You That? Reclaiming the Identity God Gave You

Have you ever stopped to consider that the loudest voice in your life may not be God's?

Somewhere between childhood wounds, disappointment, rejection, criticism, and life experiences, many of us have accepted labels that God never gave us. We begin to believe things like: I'm too much. I'm not enough. I'm unlovable. I'm forgotten. I'll never succeed.

But there is a question God asked in the Garden of Eden that still speaks to us today:

"Who told you that?" (Genesis 3:11)

During a recent time of reflection, I realized how easy it is to carry identities that were formed by experiences rather than by God's truth. What someone said to us, how someone treated us, or what we endured can quietly become the lens through which we see ourselves.

The enemy has always attacked identity before destiny. Before Adam and Eve lost the Garden, they lost confidence in who God said they were. The battle began with belief.

The same thing happens today.

When we believe false labels, we begin living beneath our calling. If we believe we're unworthy, we settle. If we believe we're incapable, we shrink back. If we believe we're forgotten, we stop showing up fully in the spaces God has called us to occupy.

The truth is this: you cannot consistently live beyond what you believe about yourself.

That's why slowing down to check in with your soul matters. It creates space to identify the labels you've been carrying and ask an important question:

Who told me that?

Was it God?

Or was it a wound?

Throughout Scripture, God is in the business of restoring identity. He renamed Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, and Simon to Peter. God specializes in calling people by who they truly are—not by what they've been through.

This week, I want to challenge you to sit quietly with the Lord and ask:

  • What label have I been carrying that God never gave me?

  • What lie have I accepted as truth?

  • What does God's Word actually say about me?

Write those answers down. Pray over them. Allow God to replace every false label with His truth.

Because you are not who your pain says you are.

You are not who your past says you are.

You are not who rejection says you are.

You are who God says you are: loved, chosen, seen, valuable, and fearfully and wonderfully made.

So today, when that old label tries to speak again, pause and ask:

Who told you that?

And then listen carefully for the voice of the One who has been calling you by your true name all along. ✨
