“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.”
— Philippians 3:13
Release is not denial—it is direction.
The apostle Paul, a man deeply acquainted with both regret and redemption, writes these words not from a place of perfection, but from maturity. He acknowledges that he hasn’t arrived, yet he refuses to be defined by where he has been. Paul understood something crucial: you cannot walk forward while gripping the past.
Release is the intentional decision to loosen your hold on yesterday so you can reach for what God is doing today.
Letting Go Without Losing the Lessons
“Forgetting what is behind” does not mean erasing memory—it means refusing to live under the weight of it.
Many women carry old seasons like unfinished business: past mistakes, missed opportunities, former identities, relationships that shaped them, or roles that have ended. These memories can quietly dictate decisions, limit faith, and keep hearts guarded.
But God never intended for your history to imprison you.
Release honors the lessons without allowing them to define your future. You are not disloyal to the past when you choose to move forward—you are obedient to God’s call.
Ask yourself:
What season do I keep revisiting instead of releasing?
What label am I still wearing that God has already removed?
What would change if I trusted God with what’s ahead?
One Thing: Choosing Focus Over Familiarity
Paul says, “One thing I do…”—not ten things, not when it’s convenient. Release requires clarity.
Distraction often masquerades as reflection. We replay old conversations, imagine alternate outcomes, or wonder what could have been. But dwelling on what was prevents us from discerning what is.
Release sharpens focus. It chooses purpose over regret. It anchors the heart in obedience instead of nostalgia.
God’s forward call is always stronger than your backward pull.
Straining Toward What Is Ahead
Straining does not mean striving—it means intention.
There is effort involved in release because the familiar feels safe, even when it’s no longer fruitful. But Paul leans forward with expectation. He reaches toward what God has prepared, trusting that what lies ahead is worth the letting go.
This posture of faith invites healing. It opens the heart to renewal. It creates space for growth.
You are not being rushed—you are being called.
Release as a Lifestyle of Becoming
Philippians 3:13 invites us into an ongoing posture, not a one-time decision. Release is practiced daily. Each morning, you choose not to rehearse the past. With each step forward, you trust God more than your history.
God is not asking you to forget who you were—He is inviting you to become who He designed you to be.
You are not behind. You are not disqualified. You are becoming.
Prayer
Father God, today I release what is behind me. I let go of regret, disappointment, and former seasons that no longer serve Your purpose in my life. Heal the places where the past still speaks too loudly. Help me fix my eyes on what You are doing now and where You are leading me next. I trust You with what’s ahead, and I choose to move forward in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Affirmation
I release the past and lean into God’s future. I am not defined by what was—I am shaped by what God is doing now. I let go with trust and move forward with purpose. I am becoming who God has called me to be. I am released, focused, and free.
